A trip to the ER

I never got around to blogging last weekend and this weekend I was going to blog about how Austin was going to start going to "school" 2 days/week and then Saturday night we ended up in the ER.

Last weekend we were all sick. Austin had a pretty high temp on Saturday night of 103.9. We called the on-call Dr and she asked if Austin had any other symptoms (a little runny nose/stuffiness) and asked if anyone in the house was sick (YES, both of us). The on-call Dr said that although the temperature sounds high to us, the body is doing what it is supposed to be doing by fighting off the illness. She said to treat the temp with Motrin and if it was still over 101 on Monday to come in...by Monday morning it was 98.6 and she was back to her normal self. I had already planned to take Monday off for President's Day, so it was nice to get an extra day with her.

We had started to look for a "preschool" type setting for Austin to start in the next couple of months, so one, my Mom would have more time for herself and two, Austin could start socializing with other children. They opened a Goddard School near us recently and we decided to go take a look at them. Most preschools don't take kids before the age of 3 and we didn't want to put Austin in a traditional daycare setting. We wanted something a little more structured which also had a curriculum. After visiting the Goddard School they invited Austin to spend a day there and see if it was good fit for her. She went on Friday and from what we gather she had a wonderful time. No tears at all, she even napped on a mat. They all commented how she did not act like a child who had never been in a daycare setting. Since it went so well we have decided to start her going 2 days/week in March.

Now on to this weekend (warning for those with a weak stomach)...Saturday morning we were all in the living watching TV because it was such a yucky rainy day out. Both Luke and I had gotten off the couch and I was in the kitchen. I then noticed Austin was standing on the couch. I told her to sit down and I started walking towards the living room. This is when she decided to do a somersault off the couch and she landed on the back of her head. She cried, but was pretty easy to calm down. We checked for bumps and did not see any. We kept her awake for 2 hours to see if she had any symptoms of a head injury. She seemed fine. We put her down for a nap and she slept for 3 hours. When she got up she ate some lunch and we went to run some errands and she still seemed fine. We got home, I made dinner and we all ate together. About 30 minutes later we were in her playroom playing and I was on the floor. She walked over to me, looked at me funny and then vomited on me. Luke jumped up and she vomited again (he said I didn't even flinch, I told him I did not want to freak her out/as she was already crying from the experience). While Luke was cleaning up I was calming her down and I decided to call the Dr since it was projectile and a large quantity. While I was on the phone with the doctor she vomited on me two more times. The Dr said that she thought we should go to the ER since Austin had a "potential" head injury earlier in the day. Luke and I game-planned and decided he would give her a bath while I showered and then we would go to the hospital.

On our way down to the ER she vomited again. We got there and pretty quickly (5-10 minutes) they had us back into a room. She continued to vomit a "handful" more times before they finally gave her something called Zofran. They did a CT scan and said everything looked fine and that the vomiting could be from the fall and things could of just gotten jostled a bit or it could be the start of a stomach bug, but since she had not been sick prior they thought it was from the fall. They discharged us with a prescription for Zofran and sent us home. She vomited on the way home and then three more times once we got home (dry heaving by this point). The last time she threw up on Saturday night was 11:30pm. When Luke got back from the 24 hour pharmacy we gave her another dose of Zofran. She slept in my arms on the recliner most of night. She got up Sunday and we started with ice chips and small sips on pedialyte. She HATES pedialyte. A couple hours went by and we gave her a slice of toast and some crackers. We decided that night to give her something for dinner but she threw up when we put her in her highchair so we did more Zofran and she ended up having a little jello instead. This morning she had some water and part of a bagel and did fine. We went to the doctor just to have her checked out and they said keep pushing clear liquids and don't worry about food right now. The Dr said the same thing that the ER doc said. Could be the fall, could be a bug. Told us what to look for and sent us on our way. The DR also said that whether it is related to the fall or a stomach bug, the treatment is the same; keep her hydrated and keep away from activities such as football just to be safe. She ate some cheerios and had a little more water. I stayed home today and will play tomorrow by ear.

These pictures are from last weekend. Austin had put most of her dinner in her hair so we styled it for her. The other picture is her showing Luke that she knows how to unlock the door with her keys.

16 Months Old

Yesterday we took Austin to the Scottsdale McCormick Railroad Park. She was not overly impressive with the train, but absolutely LOVED the carousel. Luke use to go to this same park when he was little and it brought a lot of memories for him. He said yesterday he had just as much fun as he did when he was a kid. We ended our day at the park with Daddy and Austin sharing an ice cream. The faces she made each time she took a bite were hilarious.

I have lots of pictures from this week also…Austin enjoyed her first corn dog (gosh, we feed her so well!)There are also a couple of Austin being goofy with Daddy and finally pictures of her on the carousel.
